The most famous of her roles was her character Tiana, the Disney Princess. She is her first African American Princess in The Princess and the Frog (2009). In 2011, she was honored as a Disney Legend. Her name was also honoured for her performance on the screen in Dreamgirls (2006) in which she was awarded the Academy Award for Best Picture. In the Starz show Power she played LaVerne Jukebox Ganner. Her performance in the theater are well-known as well, especially her performances as Emmie Thbodeaux in Caroline or Change, a Broadway show Caroline or Change (2004) in which she was awarded an award for the Tony Award Best Featured actress in an Musical.
